The Simple tips to write “Advantages outweigh Disadvantages” Essay?

This lesson is all about IELTS advantage disadvantage essay questions while you are told to assess if the great things about something outweigh the drawbacks. The main topics the essay which can be used for instance is all about the trend to live and work abroad.

Take a good look at the essay question we will analyse:

People will have the freedom to anywhere work and live on earth as a result of the development of communication technology and transportation.

Perform some advantages of this development outweigh the disadvantages?

Knowing the Task

It is important to distinguish between this and one that asks you to discuss advantages and disadvantages but does not ask your opinion when you have this type of advantage disadvantage essay.

If you’re asked “ which are the advantages and disadvantages of….. ” you aren’t being asked your opinion. You just have to talk about the advantages and disadvantages.

You can do that in 2 body paragraphs – one discussing the positive points, the next discussing the negative points.

However, if you have the word “ outweigh ” or “ Will this trend do have more positive or side effects ?” then you are being asked for your opinion and also you must say which there are the absolute most of – positive or negative impacts.

Then you may get your score reduced on ‘ Task Response ’ for not fully addressing the question if you do not do this.

Take a look at these examples:

People currently have the freedom to anywhere work and live in the field because of the growth of communication technology and transportation.

Do you know the advantages and disadvantages for this trend?

This advantage disadvantage essay just isn’t asking for your opinion . You might simply write one paragraph regarding the advantages and another from the disadvantages. However, this one does:

People are in possession of the freedom to anywhere work and live in the world due to the development of communication technology and transportation.

Do the advantages of the development outweigh the disadvantages?

Will this have significantly more positive or negative impacts?

Writing your Thesis

Another point out be mindful of is using the expressed word‘outweigh’. It is common for IELTS students to get mixed up when the thesis is written by them statement, as well as say the opposite from what they write into the essay!

For example, they are going to say the drawbacks outweigh the advantages, but then give more benefits in the essay. This is why no sense.

So if you should be not sure you can use the word correctly, i would suggest staying away from it in this sort of IELTS advantage disadvantage essay. You can just say exacltly what the opinion is, as with the thesis when you look at the model answer:

in my opinion that it has more benefits than drawbacks.

This can avoid any mistakes.

Planning and Organisation

You then want to think about 3 ideas that are supporting . One for example side and two when it comes to opposite side.

And that means you shall then have three body paragraphs , one aided by the drawback / benefit and two using the advantages / disadvantages.

Extremely common practice that is academic focus on the opposing opinion to yours, in order to begin with the point that you have one idea for.

As explained above, it’s very important, particularly if you are seeking a band 7 or maybe more, that the opinion reflects what is in your essay. So if sa >two is had by you benefits and another drawback .

Personal Advice

My advice of these questions is to write a paragraph about each side , and work out it clear when you look at the introduction and conclusion which side outweighs the other (i.e. your opinion about whether there are more advantages or disadvantages).

It was a exam question that is recent

in a few countries, governments are encouraging industries and businesses to maneuver to regional areas outside the cities that are big. Perform some advantages with this trend outweigh the disadvantages?

Here are a few ideas:

  1. Introduce the subject by paraphrasing the statement , then give a clear opinion about whether there are many advantages or disadvantages.
  2. Advantages – e.g. prices are reduced in regional areas; there is more space; prov >Disadvantages – e.g. greater accessibility to skilled workers in big cities; better transport and infrastructure; companies based in regional areas are further from their clients, prov >Conclude by summarizing your opinion in a different way.
